This work was co-authored with Diane Nault, Head nurse for Outpatient Clinics at the Montreal Chest Institute, MUHC, and 脡lizabeth Borycki, Clinical Informatics Specialist for Project GENESIS at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, as well as numerous collaborators from across Canada. It is a practical guide for healthcare professionals, designed to improve their knowledge and skills for optimal management of COPD patients.
"COPD is under-diagnosed and under-treated, and its prevalence and associated mortality rate are increasing sharply. It decreases the quality of life of those suffering from it and significantly increases the healthcare costs for society," emphasizes Dr. Jean Bourbeau, who has worked in recent years on developing a new approach to COPD based on self-management.
His multi-centre Quebec study has shown that this approach leads to a 40-60% decrease in visits to Emergency and the number of hospitalizations, and has already produced noticeable results since its implementation at the Montreal Chest Institute. This book will help other health professionals achieve similar outcomes at their own institutions.
