The Professional Development Certificate in Executive Production in Creative Industries is a non-credit program designed to equip professionals with practical knowledge, skills, and competencies required of an executive producer to oversee, plan, organize, direct and control all the aspects and development phases of the end-to-end life cycle of capital-intensive large-scale creative content projects and commercial entertainment products.
The program covers the fundamental principles and best practices of conceptualizing, financing, initiating, producing, and distributing creative content products, including frequently used business tools and talent management practices. Taught by leading experts and experienced executive鈥痯roducers鈥痠n a range of鈥痠ndustries, the curriculum has been designed to allow participants to gain practical skills in:
- Navigating the complex environment of creative industries
- Best practices for conceptualization and planning of creative products
- Choosing business models and monetization strategies
- Seeking and obtaining financing
- Project management in creative industries
- Project portfolio management in creative industries
- Intellectual property and contract management
- Marketing, promotion and brand management

The program is offered in English and must be completed within 2 years.
Participants in this program will deepen their skills in an area of their choice through one of 4 specializations:
- Film Creation and Production
Participants will become versed in the film value chain and learn the tools and techniques required to develop a movie or TV concept and turn it into a tangible product ready to be viewed by an audience in line with Hollywood best practices.
- VFX and Video Game Production
Participants will become versed in the business aspects of creation and production of digital interactive entertainment products for a variety of platforms and gain the skills needed to develop a, turn in into reality, and conduct successful marketing and distribution.
- Live Show Creation and Production
Participants will be initiated into all phases of executive production including business plan creation, concept development, pitching to key shareholders, production, contracting of the infrastructure and finally, operating a sustainable show.
- Event Concept Development and Production
Participants will become skilled in all aspects of event development and production including creative concept development, programming, project planning, and execution of the entire production be it a short event or a full-fledged festival.
- Equip yourself with the business skills required to turn ideas into high value productions.
- Choose from one of 4 specializations to deepen your knowledge in an area of your choice.

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:听
- Explain the role of the executive producer and the life cycle of a creation听
- Implement all the elements of a creative content business model听
- Develop a creative concept presentation and 鈥減itch鈥 it to investors听
- Develop and manage key contracts with investors, designers, vendors and service providers听
- Understand fundamentals of copyright and intellectual property asset management听
- Negotiate intellectual property models in contracts with partners, clients & designers听
- Plan the production with solid schedules, budget and risk management plan听
- Manage resources and deal with different stakeholders听
- Design a project communication plan听
- Build a solid production team
Designed with adult learners in mind, this program uses experiential, collaborative and project-based teaching and learning approaches employing a variety of instructional techniques: individual and team projects, case studies, simulations, small group discussions, peer learning, reflection and skill-building assignments. Course activities are industry-relevant, practical and contextualized. Course materials are selected for their relevancy and practical applicability to the realities of working in the industry today.
Courses in this program are鈥痗urrently being offered remotely so participants can attend from anywhere.鈥
Classes are held in live virtual sessions and are generally scheduled in the evening from 6 - 9 p.m. ET and some Saturdays from 9 a.m. 鈥 4 p.m. ET.鈥
- Creative and entertainment industry professionals looking to advance their careers: technical directors, technical staff, creative content developers, artistic and creative professionals听
- Professionals from other fields who want to make a career change into the entertainment industry听
- Recent university graduates wishing to break into creative industries and executive production听
- Government employees responsible for culture and entertainment programs
- Bachelor's degree in any discipline; OR
- DEC/DCS AND a minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience in the entertainment industry;听
To be admitted to a Professional Development Certificate, proof of English proficiency is not required. However, since the language of instruction is English, a good command of English is required in order to perform well in courses and complete the program.
This program admits new students in the following semesters:
- Fall
- Winter

Professional Development Certificates are non-credit programs and as such, are not eligible for听financial听aid听or awards such as Quebec鈥檚 loans and bursaries program (AFE).
Please note that tuition fees paid for courses as part of Professional Development Certificates are eligible for official tax receipts (T2202A and Relev茅 8).

STEP 1: PREPARE
- Choose the Professional Development Certificate you would like to apply to.
- Ensure you have a valid email address and credit card on hand to pay the application fee (Visa, MasterCard or American Express).
- From the list of programs, select the certificate you would like to apply for. Click 鈥淟earn More鈥. Then click on 鈥淎pply Now鈥 at the top of the page.
- Review the admission requirements for the program to ensure you meet the criteria.
- Ensure you have all necessary documentation required for your application as indicated in the 鈥淒ocuments Required鈥 section.
STEP 2: APPLY
- Scroll down and click on 鈥淎pply Now鈥 in the righthand column of the screen.
- Review the information displayed and click 鈥淎pply Now鈥.
- If you have credentials, log in. If not, create an account.
- Complete the rest of the application with all required information.
- Once you have applied online, you will receive a confirmation email acknowledging receipt of your application.
STEP 3: CHECK STATUS
- You can check the status of your application at any time using Athena.
- Once a decision has been made, admitted students will receive a notification by email confirming their admission to the program, along with registration instructions. You can then register for courses online during the appropriate registration period.

An overview of the entertainment and intellectual property law, types of contracts and agreements that need to be put into place at different phases of a commercial entertainment project, as well as intellectual property rights and royalties to be agreed upon with all creative project stakeholders. Contracts with cast, crews, suppliers, vendors, licensing of merchandising, food and beverage.
