Earth and Planetary Sciences

Overview

Earth and Planetary Science is a broad discipline that allows you to study the solid Earth, its hydrosphere, and our neighbouring terrestrial planets. It is a multidisciplinary field in which the principles of chemistry, physics, and mathematics are applied to real-world problems and improving our understanding of how planets work. You will examine these issues in the context of the past, present, and future.

You’ll be joining an innovative department that continues to build our body of knowledge on the origin and evolution of Earth and the terrestrial planets, their resources, and the environmental consequences of natural and anthropogenic changes.

Visit the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences website for more info.

Careers

As a graduate from the Earth and Planetary Sciences program, you will have a wide variety of career opportunities to choose from. There is presently a high demand for graduates with expertise in the many sub-disciplines of the field. Our students are recruited for employment in areas like the petroleum and mining industries and the environmental sector.

  • Petroleum Chemist
  • Geologist
  • Geophysicist
  • Hydrogeologist
  • Physical Oceanographer
  • Soil Scientist

Student experience

Our small class sizes offer a supportive atmosphere where you can build great relationships with fellow students and faculty. Professors offer quality teaching and conduct innovative research. You'll benefit from a rich and exciting environment to explore and learn.

Fieldwork is a hallmark of the EPS student experience — our students have recently travelled to the Grand Canyon, Antarctica, Tanzania, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, and future excursions are planned for Italy, Peru, Colombia and the Arctic.

In the summer, you could find employment with industry or government agencies, which offers financial benefits and first-hand geoscientific experience.

Possible minors

Minors are a great way to customize your academic experience. Many students use minors to pursue interests outside their major, while others choose minors to complement their degree.
